The 4th and 11th links must be broken. This will enable the man to pay his rent each day as follows: For the first and second days, the single links are given to the landlord. On the third day he pays with the chain of 3 and takes back the 2 single links. On the fourth and fifth days he gives back a link a day. On the sixth day he takes back the chain of 3 and the single links and gives the chain of 6. By a similar process it can be seen that the man can pay his rent each day through 23 days.
Note: that by removing the 4th link a chain of 3 links is created, the removal of the 11th link creates a chain of 6 and a chain of 12.
